‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’

Dramaturgy Note

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is one of the most iconic pieces of queer media in the mainstream. Since 1975 it has always been about breaking down norms and creating a safe space for people to be themselves. This year we decided that we wanted to theme our shadowcast around clowns and mimes, which I believe is very apt. Clowns derive their humor from reversing folkway norms, and by blending such a classic, almost counterculture art form with Rocky, we are able to create a fun and expressive performance. The freedom of self-expression that comes from clowning, the over-exaggeration, the colorful and bright fashion, and the simple joy of having fun are concepts that we used heavily in the creation of this shadowcast. I hope that you enjoy the show, and that perhaps you are inspired to allow yourself to let go.
