‘The Bacchae’

Dramaturgy Note

Working on The Bacchae granted us not only an exciting opportunity, but also a challenge. It was our explicit intention to mesh together modern ideas of gender and womanhood along with elements of Ancient Greek theater, art, and mythology. Although there are many missing pieces to Ancient Greek history and literature (thank you Caesar), these missing pieces left room for various artistic interpretations, which helped tremendously in our design and performance process. Feminist art and the historical, as well as the modern, persecution of women inspired and drove a lot of the thought behind this piece. Most importantly, our rendition of The Bacchae tells a story told many times, but often unheard. A story of women stuck in a manipulative patriarchy.
